Two injured soldiers give back to other vets
While finally coming home is a joyous occasion for members of our armed forces, for the soldiers who were injured in battle, it can also be bittersweet. This blog has already told the brave stories of army wives and marines who have risen above debilitating injuries, and now Reader’s Digest has showcased another pair of courageous soldiers who are doing their part to support the troops.
National Guard Spc. John Gallina and Staff Sgt. Dale Beatty are cofounders of Purple Heart Homes, a non-profit organization that recruits former servicemen and other volunteers to adapt existing homes and construct new ones for disabled veterans.
Both Gallina and Staff Sgt. Dale Beatty were severely injured during a 2004 tour in Iraq. The two men – who became fast friends when they met in the National Guard as teens – were in a humvee when it ran over an antitank mine that blasted through the vehicle. Though Gallina had a mild traumatic brain injury that could affect his memory retention and cause mood swings, he was able to serve the rest of his time overseas. Beatty, however, had to have his legs amputated.
The idea for Purple Heart Homes was reportedly inspired by the actions of the Iredell County Builders Association (ICBA). When Beatty returned to his native state of North Carolina, the ICBA reportedly contacted him to say that a group of local contractors had volunteered to build him a home to accommodate his disability. Beatty accepted, and insisted on helping the team – most of whom had served – with the project, partly to reassure himself that he could still provide his wife and two children, Beatty told Reader’s Digest.
“I told [Gallina] that we should make what happened to me a reality for others,” Beatty explains. And, according to the magazine, the two war heroes used their pensions to start Purple Heart Homes.
