While some ailments may take years to develop before they start affecting your day-to-day life, others can transform everything in an instant. Neurological events like strokes and ruptured aneurysm fall into this category, as both can have a substantial effect on everything from cognitive ability to motor functions. So, when Forbes contributor Tony Nitti found out he had a brain aneurysm – and would need emergency surgery – in 2008, he feared his life would never be the same.

"While many of the events of that day have been mercifully blocked from my memory, one thing I remember quite vividly was a conversation I had with my dad. Ever the blind optimist, [...] he assured me that in a few years, the aneurysm would just be a memory, a footnote to my much longer, larger life story," Nitti candidly wrote in a recent piece for the financial news outlet.

Now, five years on, Nitti confessed that – though he hadn't believed his father at the time – he has recovered from the event to an extent he never imagined. While once eager to find the perfect survival story to cling to, Nitti confided that instead he has become that inspirational figure. In sharing his experience, he has both promoted aneurysm awareness, and offered himself as a source of hope for those who are battling this medical issue.

According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, approximately 30,000 Americans experience an aneurysm rupture per year. To show your support for this cause, consider buying an aneurysm awareness bracelet from Bravelets. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to a related charity.

According to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, approximately 60,000 people are diagnosed with the condition – which affects the central nervous system and restricts mobility – each year, and an estimated 1 million Americans are currently living with this medical issue. Last month, the online publication dna, which is based in India, covered the story of one design student who has dedicated her final project to helping others with the disease.

Vidhi Bhargav, now 21, was just a year old when her father developed Parkinson's disease, and she spent most of her life watching him battle it. When it came time to choose a subject for her last design school creation, "she decided to use her knowledge of fashion to come up with a user-friendly design dedicated to similar patients," the source states.

"I wanted this collection to be a tribute to my father, my hero and inspiration through the lessons I learnt from his life. I hope this small design input can help make lives a little easier for other patients," Bhargav said of her handiwork. The bag she developed was well-received by her classmates and teachers, and was created so that people with Parkinson's disease could have easy access to the medications and other essential items they needed to keep their symptoms under control.

If you know someone who has Parkinson's disease, you can show your support in an equally fashionable way. By purchasing a sleek and stylish Parkinson's disease awareness bracelet from Bravelets, you can demonstrate how much you care about this issue. Plus, a portion of your proceeds will go directly to a related charity.

For Stiliyan Petrov, a professional soccer player who has devoted his life to the game, the last two years have been transformative. According to BBC News, the mid-fielder, who played for Bulgaria International before joining a number of teams in England's Premier League, was diagnosed with leukemia in March 2012 after he developed a fever following an intense match.

"Since being diagnosed with acute leukemia, I have come to understand and appreciate the way in which this disease impacts the lives of so many people," he told the news outlet earlier this month, explaining that he now has a chance to capitalize on his clout for a greater good.

"For the life I've lived in football, I will always be incredibly grateful. For the opportunity this crazy thing that happened in my life has given me, I also feel grateful in a strange kind of way," said Petrov.

Ever since Petrov announced that he would be stepping down from his role as captain of Aston Villa Football Club, his fans have come out in droves to show their support. Recently, the Scottish Sun reported that fans of Petrov – who formerly played for the Celtics in Glasgow – declared the evening of Aston Villa's final match of the season as "Petrov Day," with 4,000 attendees donning masks in his likeness.

While taking part in a middle school volleyball game may be a relatively insignificant thing for many students, for one young girl with dystonia, her triumphs on the court are a sign of something greater. WCJB-TV, an ABC affiliate in Florida, recently shared the story of 11-year-old Samantha Staab, who was diagnosed with the condition four years ago. Dystonia is a complex neurological issue that affects the mechanisms in charge of muscle relaxation, and can present itself in many different forms. in Staab's case, it has dramatically limited her mobility and caused her muscles to act like they "have a mind of their own," the news outlet states.

Though still a young girl, Staab has already undergone various surgeries and hours of physical therapy in order to gain fuller control of her muscles, and has been committed to overcoming her condition as a player on her school's volleyball team.

Her father, Rick Staab, further explained the details of her condition, noting that her "muscles compete against each other and contract at the same time when one should be relaxed and one should be contracting… so it twists em up, makes all just normal movements very difficult."

Though it can be painful, the 11-year-old still bumps, spikes and sets alongside her teammates, and refuses to let her condition dictate what she can and cannot do. Her coach, Scott Costello, told WCJB that the girl's bravery and strength is infectious, and continually inspires her teammates to go above and beyond as well.

Staab's unrelenting dedication to the sport she loves has not only motivated her community but also promoted dystonia awareness. To show your support for this cause, consider purchasing a dystonia awareness bracelet from Bravelets.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 795,000 people suffer from a stroke every year, and – depending on its severity and how quickly they can obtain medical attention – the long-term effect of this "brain attack" can be extremely detrimental. Because of this, organizations like the American Heart Association have made great strides to increase stroke awareness and advise the general public about the lifestyle choices that can reduce their risk.

May is Stroke Awareness month, and communities across the country are recognizing this by holding fundraising events such as the Strides for Stroke Charity Walk, which is being orchestrated by the Minnesota Stroke Association. According to local media outlet Winona Daily News, a 9-year-old boy will be taking part in this year's event, and – even at such a young age – he truly has a personal investment in this cause.

The source reports that Ethan Fritts of Ham Lake was rushed to the hospital at the end of last year after what began as a headache progressed into a pediatric stroke – a rare occurrence that affects six out of every 100,000 children, the National Stroke Association states.

But the resilient 9-year-old fought back and has made a full recovery after undergoing surgery shortly after the event. The media outlet states that Fritts can join in with all of the neighborhood children as they play, and will be leading the stroke awareness walk this coming weekend.

To show your support for stroke survivors and fund further research, consider purchasing a stroke awareness bracelet from Bravelets.

When Jacob Barnett was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2, his doctors warned his family that the boy would face many challenges in life, and may never be able to speak, read or live independently. Now, 14, Barnett has surpassed all expectations, and has shown himself to be a genius on par with Albert Einstein. Currently pursuing a masters in quantum physics, Barnett's incredible story has brought autism awareness to the international forefront, making it clear that though a person's mind may work differently than others', it can still be capable of truly incredible feats.

In an interview with BBC News, the boy's mother, Kristine, spoke about his childhood, and how she as a parent came to realize her son's unique gift. She told the story of a trip to the planetarium when Jacob – only three years old at the time – effortlessly answered complex questions about space that a professor posed to the tour group.

Looking back at that moment, the teen remembered thinking that the lecture was "trivial," and that the answers – which many adults may struggle with – were simply present in his mind as a toddler.

So far, Barnett has spoken about his condition, and the power of "forgetting what you know" at a TED conference, and the BBC has already intimated that he could be a future contender for the Nobel prize.

Autism is a complex condition that, according to new figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, affects one in 50 children born in this country. To show your support for this cause, consider purchasing an autism awareness bracelet from Bravelets.

For many men and women, the battle against cancer is a private matter. However, when actress Angelina Jolie decided to have a double mastectomy because of her genetic predisposition to this life-altering disease, she saw it as an opportunity to educate others and raise breast cancer awareness overall.

This week, the stunning starlet penned a candid piece for The New York Times, in which she shares the trauma of losing her mother to breast cancer years ago, and the shocking discovery that she had an 87 percent chance of developing it as well.

"Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could," she wrote. "I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer."

Jolie confides that she had both of her breasts removed this year, and has since undergone reconstructive surgery. She explained in her article that taking this step was an incredibly difficult one, but it was a decision she doesn't regret.

According to BreastCancer.org, one in eight women in the United States will develop this disease. Thanks to breast cancer awareness efforts, more women are identifying and seeking treatment for this condition at an earlier stage, but there is always more work to be done.To show your support for those who are battling this cancer and fund further research into causes and cures, consider purchasing a breast cancer awareness bracelet from Bravelets. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to a related charity.

This Sunday, families across the country gathered to celebrate Mother's Day – an occasion that commemorates all of the hard work and devotion these women devote to their loved ones. Though intended to be a happy day, for many this time of year is also tinged with sadness and struggle.

Such was the case for Shira Klein, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma three years ago and had to undergo a transplant earlier last week. However, as her husband, Justin, explained in a touching piece for The Huffington Post, his wife had never let her illness keep her from smiling, and their family refused to let it stop them from celebrating this special day.

Klein shared the story of how he took to Facebook to look for help when his wife needed a stem cell donor last year, and that the campaign he started brought "an onslaught of love" that he had never thought possible. As well as finding a donor for Shira, the movement has connected many others with individuals willing to help. Thanks to the strength of one family, and the selflessness of strangers, the Kleins were all smiles as they celebrated Mother's Day in the hospital.

Even before taking home the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in "Silver Linings Playbook," 22-year-old Jennifer Lawrence had already won the hearts of moviegoers the world over, who have celebrated the starlet for her endearing self-deprecation and openness as well as her onscreen performances. Now, the A-lister is being honored by a Down syndrome awareness group from her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

According to reports, Lawrence has been given the Down Syndrome Friendship award by the non-profit Down Syndrome, Inc., for her continued dedication and support of a family friend with the condition. The actress has long-been close with Andy Strunk – a 23-year-old who she went to middle school with – and the two have continued to keep in touch over the years as her career has taken off.

E!Online states that Lawrence's brother Blaine accepted the award on her behalf, remarking that the Lawrences are proud and honored by the recognition, and "thankful for the friendship they share with Andy and his family."

The actress and her loved ones have played an active role in promoting Down syndrome awareness and supporting the local organization. The source notes that the Oscar-winner's grandfather regularly holds events for the group, and the star has volunteered with them in the past.

The National Down Syndrome Society estimates that 400,000 Americans are currently living with this condition. If you would like to show your support for this cause, consider purchasing a Down syndrome awareness bracelet from Bravelets today. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to a related charity.

It often takes moments of utter terror and despair to reveal an individual's inner strength. Recently, CBS New York reported that a three-year-old boy in Brooklyn exhibited such exceptional courage when his mother began having an epileptic seizure.

According to the news outlet, Asha Diaz fell to the floor and started convulsing. At that point, her son Omas immediately leapt into action. He got dressed and unlocked the apartment door, then proceeded to run up the stairs of his complex – where his grandmother is also a resident – and started knocking on her door.

"I said 'Grandma, mommy needs your help,'" the three-year-old told the local news outlet. His grandmother, Sharon, noticed that the boy looked "serious or scared" and followed him downstairs to her daughter's home. There, she found the young woman shaking on the ground, and immediately called 911.

Now, Omas is being hailed as a hero, and his mother told the news outlet that she was "thankful and grateful" for her son's instincts.

Epilepsy.com estimates that about 3 million Americans are living with this condition, which is characterized by convulsive seizures that can strike at any time. CURE Epilepsy, an organization devoted to increasing research into this medical concern, states that as many as half of these individuals don't have control over these incidents.

Omas Diaz's bravery has drawn increased attention to Epilepsy awareness, but there is still more work to be done. To show your support for people who suffer from this condition, consider purchasing an Epilepsy awareness bracelet from Bravelets. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to a related charity.
